My Self-Care Journey: How One of the Hardest Seasons of My Life Changed Everything
Have you ever felt like you were doing everything you could just to make it through the day?
Maybe you’re constantly caring for others while your own needs keep getting pushed aside. Maybe stress has become your normal, and you feel exhausted, overwhelmed, or disconnected from yourself. Or perhaps you keep telling yourself that you’ll focus on your well-being when life becomes less busy—but that moment never seems to come.
I understand that feeling because I’ve lived it.
My own journey with self-care began during one of the most difficult seasons of my life. What started as a time of uncertainty, stress, and exhaustion eventually became a journey of healing, resilience, and discovering what it truly means to care for yourself.
Through that experience, I learned that self-care is not selfish, optional, or something we do only when we have extra time. It is a foundation for our physical health, emotional well-being, relationships, and ability to navigate life’s challenges.
That journey is also what inspired me to create The Complete Self-Care Course: Reduce Stress, Restore Your Energy, and Reclaim Your Well-Being—a practical, evidence-informed course designed to help you build sustainable self-care habits and create greater balance in your own life.
Have you ever felt like you were doing everything you could just to make it through the day?
Maybe you're constantly taking care of everyone else while your own needs fall to the bottom of the list. Maybe stress has become your normal, and you're running on empty. Or perhaps you keep telling yourself you'll focus on your well-being "when life settles down"—but that day never seems to come.
If any of that sounds familiar, you're not alone.
I know what it's like because I've lived it.
When Life Changed Overnight
Several years ago, my family experienced an unexpected financial crisis when my spouse lost his job. Overnight, the stability we had worked so hard to build disappeared.
Simple things like paying bills, buying groceries, and wondering how we would make it through the month became daily sources of stress. The uncertainty was exhausting. My mind rarely stopped racing, sleep became difficult, and I constantly felt like I was living in survival mode.
As the months went on, the chronic stress began affecting every part of my life.
Then my health began to suffer.
An autoimmune condition that had been relatively quiet suddenly flared, leaving me dealing with fatigue, pain, and inflammation. Even ordinary daily tasks became difficult.
For the first time, I realized I couldn't simply push through anymore.
Something had to change.
Discovering That Self-Care Isn't Selfish
Like many people, I used to think of self-care as something optional—something you did after everything else was finished.
But during that difficult season, I learned something completely different.
Self-care wasn't selfish.
It wasn't indulgent.
It wasn't about spa days or perfection.
It was essential.
I couldn't control everything happening around me, but I could begin changing how I cared for myself in the middle of it.
Instead of ignoring my needs, I began listening to my body.
Instead of pushing through exhaustion, I started making space for rest.
Instead of believing I had to carry everything alone, I began reaching for support.
Those small changes didn't solve every problem overnight, but they helped me rebuild my health, resilience, and hope—one step at a time.
What I Learned About True Self-Care
One of the biggest lessons I learned is that self-care isn't just one habit.
It's a way of living.
Our physical health affects our emotions. Our thoughts influence our stress levels. Our relationships impact our mental well-being. Our spiritual lives shape how we find meaning during difficult seasons.
Everything is connected.
That's why lasting well-being requires caring for the whole person.
Over time, I began intentionally nurturing every area of my life:
* Caring for my physical health through nourishing food, movement, and restorative sleep.
* Supporting my emotional well-being through mindfulness, journaling, and healthy emotional processing.
* Learning to quiet anxious thoughts and develop healthier mental habits.
* Strengthening relationships through communication and healthier boundaries.
* Reconnecting with my faith, values, gratitude, and time in nature.
* Creating healthier rhythms around work, finances, and everyday life.
Little by little, I stopped merely surviving and started living with greater balance and intention.

What Self-Care Really Looks Like
Self-care is often misunderstood.
It isn't about escaping your responsibilities.
It isn't about being perfect.
And it certainly isn't about feeling guilty for taking care of yourself.
Real self-care looks like:
* Setting healthy boundaries.
* Getting enough rest.
* Managing stress intentionally.
* Nourishing your body.
* Caring for your emotional and mental health.
* Building supportive relationships.
* Living according to your values.
* Creating habits that help you thrive instead of simply survive.
These small, consistent choices become the foundation for long-term health and resilience.
You Don't Have to Wait Until You're Burned Out
One of the greatest lessons my journey taught me is that we don't have to wait until life completely overwhelms us before we begin caring for ourselves.
The sooner we invest in our well-being, the better equipped we are to navigate life's inevitable challenges.
You don't have to earn rest.
You don't have to reach a breaking point before you deserve care.
You deserve support now.
